Careers event: Create a zine, magazine or newspaper

This week, students in all three schools were given the morning to work as a team to create zine, magazine or newspaper for each of their schools.

Teams were each asked to appoint a student editor to run editorial meetings and oversee content, design and production.  The rest of the students were able to research specific roles including journalists, photographers, graphic designers and art directors to help them decide which roles they would take on for the project.

Content of each publication was left entirely up to the students to decide what they wanted to include although some briefs were provided for mentors  to role play interviewees.  The journalists were asked to identify suitable questions to ask during in their interviews and to arrange for the photographer to come and take photos.   The variety of content was impressive with some students sticking to the role play briefs that had been allocated, some replicating content they had seen themselves in other publications  and other students focusing on their own interests to provide articles and reviews of games and TV programmes they had enjoyed themselves.

Each team was able to experience the pressure of working to a deadline to meet the demands of submitting work on time.  Editors were asked to give feedback about any changes that they felt the work might need so that any changes could be made.  The editors, with support from their editorial assistants, then collated all of the information in sufficient time for the Art Directors to put the layout together.

Each school’s finished publication is available to view in full on our Facebook page.
